Utah Woman Charged With Child Abuse for Giving Birth to Drug-Addicted Baby.

Shea Renee Sheeran, 27, is being charged with intentional infliction of serious physical injury as well as child endangerment after she gave birth to a drug-addicted baby at the Park City, Utah Medical Center.

According to local police, Sheeran has a history of drug addiction. When she gave birth to a baby boy in late August 2012, toxicology tests showed that she had meth, cocaine, amphetamines and opiates in her system. Tests also showed that that the baby had amphetamines and opiates in his system.

The infant had to be medflighted to the Intermountain Medical Center within 6 hours of his birth to receive emergency drug-addiction treatment, including decreasing doses of morphine to wean him off of his drug dependence.

The child’s doctors say that the boy may experience permanent complications from the birth, including brain damage and learning disabilities.

At the time of her pregnancy, and at the time of the child’s birth, Sheeran was on parole from the Utah State Prison system.
